The proper way to finish a canvas will be determined by the use that is going to be given to it and the location where it should be placed, since a canvas for a finish line in a one-hour race is not the same as permanent advertising on the facade of a shopping center. The evolution of technology in recent years has meant that printing is increasingly faster, better and with very tight costs.Finishing departments are often the bottleneck for digital printing companies as they are still very labor intensive and slow compared to presses. When talking about canvas finishes, it usually refers to the reinforcement of the perimeter area and the subsequent placement of eyelets. The purpose of the reinforcement is to increase the resistance of the canvas to tearing and the eyelets are used to attach the canvas to a frame or structure passed through them with elastics or straps. For 'short-term' or interior applications it may not be necessary to reinforce the canvases and place the eyelets directly, but for outdoor uses at height, for example, it is absolutely necessary to do so, since otherwise the canvas risks breaking under tension. generated by the wind.According to the Spanish finishing company Plastgrommet, the success of a good finish is the combination of three factors: quality of the canvas, way of reinforcing it and the correct choice of eyelet. Here are a few tips to keep in mind during the tarp finishing and sealing process. The quality of the printing support marks the result. If the cheapest option is chosen, such as a laminated frontlit, it will not be able to withstand high stresses even if the perimeter area is reinforced. On the other hand, a poor quality canvas may have welding problems and therefore not be uniform.Evaluate your best option in terms of technology, according to your production volumes and canvas size. When we talk about finishes we refer to the different methods that can be used to finish off the edge of a canvas. We can choose from a wide variety of finishes, depending on the use we are going to give our material. The edge of the banner will be raw, as it is after the material is cut to the selected size. This finish is also called blood cut.No grommets or perimeter reinforcement are placed. This type of finish is commonly used at trade shows and events. This type of reinforcement is enabled by making a fold or sheath with the canvas material itself, sewing or welding it.In this way you can insert a tube that serves to hold the banner or banderole.Depending on the needs of the job, the tubes can be placed on the top and bottom or on the sides of the banner. In the US this finish is still very popular, although in Europe it is an option that hardly anyone uses unless it is done on textiles such as polyester. The main problem with this technique is that the material is constantly perforated when sewing, which considerably weakens it from the point of view of tensile strength. At the same time, stitching is a very visible technique on the graphic image, which significantly impoverishes the aesthetics of the canvas. The most widespread system is perimeter reinforcement. This consists of welding on the back of the canvas and along its entire perimeter a load tape that allows a greater thickness in the area where the eyelets will later be placed. The reinforcement is usually welded using high frequency, although there are different techniques such as hot air, hot wedge or ultrasound. The main advantage of this system is that the two layers of canvas merge completely into one, significantly improving performance from the point of view of tensile strength. For the most demanding applications, such as complete façade canvases, a high-tenacity PVC-coated polyester tape is usually welded to the canvas to achieve maximum tear resistance. There is a fourth option which are adhesives to reinforce the perimeter area. These can be done simply with double-sided tape folding the canvas or with adhesive reinforcements consisting of PVC canvas with an adhesive that embraces the fabric on its back and front. This option is recommended for companies that do not have welding equipment and in applications where there are not excessive requirements from the point of view of the voltage to be supported, such as racks, pop-ups, displays or table fronts.Grommets are washers that are riveted to the moon and are used for installation by means of straps, flanges, elastic cords and other fastening mechanisms. They are essential to hold the canvas to the frame, since if not placed, it would easily break due to the tension exerted by the wind. There are eyelets of various types and your choice depends on the type of canvas and its finish. On many occasions and due to ignorance, customers use eyelets of poor quality, which do not meet the minimum requirements for anti-corrosion treatment or are so thin that they deform easily.Rafael Menéndez, Export Manager of PlastGrommet, a Spanish specialist in the placement of eyelets, explains the criteria to take into account: "From our company we recommend that in case of using metallic eyelets, that they be at least nickel-plated iron (not aluminum).A very interesting choice for customers today is to use transparent eyelets that allow the printed graphic image to be seen and do not oxidize over time.”The comments are the opinion of the
