Rome City Schools went to a flexible learning day on Friday, August 5, 2022, to review safety and security measures on school campuses after guns were found at the high school twice this week.
Rome City Schools Board members will have a called meeting at 12:00 p.m. at the Rome City Schools Central Office Board Room.
Administrators at Rome High School have reported that a second student has been found with a gun on school campus. According to administrators, the student was found with the gun on his person, but there was no time where the weapon was used to threaten teachers, students or staff.
The student willingly turned the gun over to school authorities and law enforcement and will be criminally charged with having a weapon on school property. The student is also subject to disciplinary actions in accordance with school policies.
As always, the safety of our students, faculty and staff are priority on all our campuses. Rome City Schools is committed to providing a safe place for students to learn.
A Rome High School student was found in possession of a gun and marijuana in his backpack on Wednesday.
According to interim Superintendent Dawn Williams, “With a growing concern about safety in school, it is important to note that Rome City Schools already has measures in place to protect our students. Safety is always our main priority when students are on campus. Please, we encourage all students, faculty members and staff members to say something if they see something.”
Williams added, “School administrators and law enforcement were immediately notified when they were made aware of this incident, and they immediately questioned the student about having a weapon on campus. At no time was the weapon used to threaten any person on campus.”
Criminal charges and disciplinary actions in accordance with school policies will be brought against the student for the rule infraction.
Reports said that the handgun was located in the boy’s backpack.
