"I’m mostly relieved to see that grille at the top getting more fins"
A while back we shared a chat between a couple of Team NL's members talking about the topic of "what is a game 'developer'"? That was a nice little back and forth format in which we were chatting over a virtual cup of tea - or virtually but with actual cups of tea and coffee... you get the idea. We decided to revisit the format for a little chin-wag about the Nintendo Switch OLED Model, now that the dust has settled and many will have decided whether to bother chasing after pre-orders.
For this chat we have Gavin Lane, Kate Gray and Tom Whitehead talking semi-seriously about Nintendo's latest Switch iteration. What do we think? Who will buy it? Does it look like a stormtrooper?
Let's get right into it.
Gavin: I should preface everything I’m about to say with the fact that I’m the dude who bought four 3DSs. I am that idiot. I traded in my original Aqua and my subsequent red XL to upgrade, but have since gone back and got them again. I may have a problem. How many 3DSssss did you two buy?
Kate: Two, technically, but I swapped one in for the New Nintendo 3DS… XL… plus??? I have technically owned three Switches: One was an impulse buy (from NL Director Ant, four years ago); one was an impulse buy because it came with a ton of supermarket loyalty points (which I spent on a fancy toothbrush) but then I immediately felt guilty and sold it; the third is the one I got for work because the first one is Drift Central. I should not be allowed to have a credit card.
Tom: I had the original, which I then traded for an XL, then got the ‘ambassador’ little New 3DS that gives me hand cramps but has Xenoblade coverplates and coloured buttons, so the cramps are worth it.
Gavin: Okay, so varying degrees of idiocy… sorry, enthusiasm for Nintendo products, then! First up, after all the rumours and hype, what did you think when the ‘new’ console was finally revealed?
Tom: I’d actually expected an ‘XL’, because anything with new chipsets is a no-go this year for practical reasons, so I wasn’t ‘disappointed’ as a result. I just thought “oh dear, that won’t go down well”.
Kate: Mostly, I just thought, “oh no, everyone is going to be so angry.” And I was right about that, at least!
But personally, I just got a new Switch, so I’m good for the time being. Hopefully the base Switches miiiiight be cheaper now?
Gavin: I think the main barrier to price reduction on the ‘base’ model at the moment is that, from a business perspective, there’s zero reason for Nintendo to reduce the price — Switch is still selling huge numbers. The hardware itself is getting prettttttty long in the tooth, but there’s still huge demand so I don’t see a blanket reduction in the near future. Perhaps we’ll see some deeper discounts and bigger deals on the regular version come Black Friday and Holiday season, though.
I bought the ‘Slightly Better Battery’ Switch using the excuse that my mum could buy my old one off me to play Animal Crossing. Cheap, I’m not a monster.
My first thought seeing it was “ooo, sexy new dock”, actually.
Tom: Funny you noticed the dock, as the OLED is really all about handheld play. As someone who plays portable 90% of the time it’s hard not to consider a trade-in upgrade, but if you play on a TV there’s pretty much no point. It is a pretty dock though.
Gavin: I play maybe 75% docked… which makes the OLED Switch make even less sense for me! As established above, though, I‘ve got a problem. I bought the ‘Slightly Better Battery’ Switch using the excuse that my mum could buy my old one off me to play Animal Crossing. Cheap, I’m not a monster.
Kate: I’m also 90% portable, but as you might have read on my piece about burn-in… I’m a bit too afraid of burn-in. I know a bunch of people said it’s not a problem, but I don’t want to be anxious about it!
Tom: No Tik-Tok on Switch, you’ll be fine!
Gavin: I totally understand that anxiety. I’ve had an OLED TV for a few years now, and I’m pretty active when it comes to changing channels and running the in-built pixel shifter program. Feels like I’m having to nurse the tech at times. Worth it, though. I’m still amazed when it displays black and you can’t tell if the screen is on or not.
What are our feelings on the price?
Kate: I already forgot what the price was. $50 more? That seems reasonable to me; it’s a new model with a few minor but much-needed updates. I’m mostly relieved to see that grille at the top getting more fins, that was the bane of my life.
I have a theory that Nintendo was going to announce this during E3, as a minor upgrade that helps them keep up with Switch demand, and then they saw the hype, and just… completely backed out.
Tom: I think the price is fair for what should be a good screen upgrade (albeit, predictably, there's 'surprise' that Nintendo is making a profit on each unit), as it's a bit bigger, higher quality and combined with other small improvements. It’ll be interesting to see how sales go, especially if Nintendo does Black Friday deals and game bundle promotions with the original model. Maybe the OLED will be the ‘premium’ one that ultimately does less numbers because of that extra $50. I doubt Nintendo will phase out the original in any way, for example.
Kate: I have a theory that Nintendo was going to announce this during E3, as a minor upgrade that helps them keep up with Switch demand, and then they saw the hype, and just… completely backed out. I feel a bit bad for them, because there’s no way they could have lived up to it.
Tom: Yeah, that seems very possible. Especially when you see those white Joy-Cons, almost a very deliberate Metroid Dread tie-in that would have slotted into the finale of the Direct. But the internet speculation may have spoiled it.
Gavin: It’s a bit much when you see some people blaming poor performance in third-party games on Nintendo for not supplying the extra juice of a Switch ‘Pro’ which the devs were apparently ‘relying’ on!
Kate: I wonder if they’re now scrambling to make the Pro… 👀
Tom: The internet chatter won’t significantly affect hardware development and strategy, in my opinion. Sales of the system are still massive, so the ‘noise’ online is a small percentage of the real world market. There’ll likely be an upgrade in the next couple of years, because the Switch is getting old, but I strongly believe the online talk will have had little impact on the end-product, it’ll be more about what major partners want, what research says will succeed etc.
Gavin: Agreed. I don’t see Nintendo getting jittery or riled up by internet hopes and dreams, or reports that conflated this SKU with whatever else is in the works. Certainly not while huge bundles of cash continue to roll in from the current console, anyhow.
And that really is what Switch OLED is: the current console with a bit bigger screen. My first reaction on seeing the Neon Red/Blue Joy-Con version was “Who the heck is going to buy that version?”, forgetting that there are still loads of people who don’t own a Switch, people who may well pick one up over the next couple of years. Nobody I know, but millions of people.
Kate: I thought, “who on earth would buy a Fortnite console?” and the answer is me, for work. There’s always someone.
Tom: Those Joy-Con colours are nice, mind!
Kate: I’m not won over by the white, personally… on a console, it’s fine; on a HANDHELD, it’s gonna get greasy. I know people in the comments are always quite upset that I’m implying they are all filthy beings, but humans are greasy! It’s just natural! Of course, you can take good care of it, or wear gloves, but who knows what’ll happen. It might yellow in the sun (it probably won’t).
Tom: At least the console is still black, and when the Joy-Con sticks pack-in after eight months we’ll buy different coloured ones anyway…
Gavin: Ha, sad as it is, getting fresh Joy-Cons is one of the big attractions for me. I gave my Slightly Better Battery Switch ones to my mum with my old console (see, told you I’m not a monster!) For me, I kinda like how the white dock will sit nicely next to my TV and blend with the living room a bit better. I’m paranoid about my gaming stuff spilling out of the office and taking over the whole flat. I saw a pic with the white PS5 and the Xbox… *thinks* Series S! They made a nice trio. I don’t own either of those consoles yet, but I like the idea.
Kate: I wonder if the people who do custom paint jobs are happy about having a white Switch, which probably makes a much better canvas…
Tom: Weirdly it was the only thing that nearly put me off, as every other box and gadget in my living room is black. Then I figured the dock would look nice and stand out, like a rebellious throwback hitting us with exciting new things like an ethernet input.
Kate: It looks like a stormtrooper. That’s the opposite of rebellious!
Tom: Oh no, now you’re putting me off it again!
Gavin: For a moment while watching the reveal trailer, I thought the Switch logo on the front lit up!
Gavin: Okay then, the billion dollar question(s): Will you be getting one, and why?
Kate: Nah. If I still had my Original Launch Switch™, I would consider the minor upgrade; as it is, I’m good. I miiiight get the Joy-Cons if they sell them separately, because my drift on the Old Switch is so bad that I can’t play games at all. I tried to fix it, but it just changed the direction of the drift
Tom: Oof, that’s not good. I will be, but it only makes sense doing it with a trade-in to take the edge off the price. As I said earlier I play almost exclusively in handheld, in fact my dock was only used for the first time in ages when grabbing docked screenshots for a review. So with that in mind I have some favourite games I’d like to play on a better / bigger screen, plus Metroid Dread of course!
Gavin: Oooh, Dread... Well, having established my idiocy from the off, of course I’ll be getting one. For me, as a package that comes with new Joy-Cons, a sexy new screen and a second dock (which I’ve wanted for my office for years now), it offers just enough. For sure, Nintendo knows what it’s doing by injecting this marginally premium version into the market, and I’m certain I won’t be the only father eyeing the new SKU and using the kids as an excuse to splash out come October time. They can have the old one, I’ll upgrade!
My kids are a tad young and I’ve got a few 3DSs knocking around, but you know. Any excuse.
Those are some of our thoughts on the OLED, but where do you stand? Are you thinking of getting one? Do you think it'll sell well? Does it look like a stormtrooper? Let us know in the comments.
Tom has been involved in the games industry for a decade, mostly writing about it or struggling to sell Indie games. Loves reading, writing, hunting Capcom’s fiercest monsters and watching baseball.
The OLED is ONLY worth if you do not already own a Switch or your Switch is broken (like overheating, dead pixels etc.).
Edit: this is my personal opinion.
Such a shame in a way, I would love to pre-order but I can't justify the purchase. It's nice though.
@Zuljaras Nailed it. There’s literally no reason to waste money on this thing if you already own a Switch. It’s mainly showing that Nintendo is staying ignorant to the flaws in the existing model. Good thing the Steam Deck came along to solve all that!
EDIT: As @JasmineDragon brought up, this screen could improve clarity for those that need the extra visibility! Thank you!
This is not worth upgrading, it's just another option for those who don't a switch yet, and frankly I'd encourage them to go for the cheaper current model and spend the rest on a couple of games.
Also give it a few months and the current model will get a price reduction
I was thinking about it, but just preordered a “Steam Deck” instead as I have over 1000 games on steam.
@Zuljaras Yep, your comment gets a +1 from me.
I 100% understand those who don't feel its worth it to upgrade. For me, it happens to be worth it for a few reasons: 1) I have a launch unit and the shell is scratched up and tired. The top vents are broken and the back plate is slightly warped. This thing has been through the ringer. 2) As a launch unit, I skipped the 'red box' version but still crave that slightly improved battery life. 3) I play 80% handheld and have never experienced an OLED screen. Plus, I use even this crap OG kickstand a lot. The new one will be amazing. 4) Just recently I ran out of internal and SD storage so the slight increase will help a lot. 5) I have kids who now want a Switch and my current one is perfect to give to them once my OLED arrives (and once they earn it). Then we can use features in games that require 2 Switches (like Mario Party). 6) The new white joycon will bring my total to 8 (4 pairs), enabling me and the kids to all play Smash with complete controllers.
I've got the White one pre-ordered. I shouldn't be buying this as WFH atm and using it in the dock but the OLED screen, built-in network port, extra storage, longer battery life and my old Switch's fan rattling away, I'm "ok" buying this until the Switch 2 comes out. Oh, and the White model looks (be careful what I type next ........nice!!
I'm disappointed though that it's not a proper spec upgrade as most people were expecting. Nintendo being Nintendo, I don't think the Steam Deck will change their plans.
I'm getting one. Mainly because my Day 1 Switch has a crack in the back and I would like the extra battery life. Also, the white joy-cons look cool.
Yep worth it for me bc I only have a Lite. Excited to actually be able to ‘switch’ come October!
@invictus4000 I'm more or less in the same position. I couldn't justify an update to the 'red box' but the OLED seems a perfect moment to upgrade.
Why do people speak about this as if your opinion is fact for all. Its worth it for those who see the value. For me its worth it because i can afford it, i like new stuff and the new features appeals to me. My opinion is that nintendo is smart with this for many reasons, but one reason that came in mind today, is that when many of us now buy this new switch, many of us will most likely sell the old one for cheap, that will give many other people the oppurtunity to own a switch and then again give nintendo a bigger userbase and profits.
I've been back and forth on this a lot, honestly. My launch unit is kind of falling apart from the abuse that comes with being clumsy and kind of a butterfingers and I'm in dire need of a replacement.
I could either wait for the OLED and pay the ~$520 CAD after taxes or I could just get a Lite today and save $220. I play mostly in handheld but enjoy playing on the TV on weekends. If I get a Lite, I could just keep my launch Switch permanently docked and use cloud saves between the two. But if I get a Lite and the sticks start to drift, I'll be very displeased. At least with the OLED, I could swap out the joy-cons like I've done with my current Switch. The screen is also very tempting.
So $300 for the more affordable and immediate solution, albeit with some caveats, or $520 for the fancy screen and full replacement for my launch Switch. I'm thinking about this way too hard. I'm open to arguments for either option to push me to one over the other!
Switch OLED should only be considered if you're a first time Switch-owner. If you're in the market for one and haven't jumped in yet this is the model that those people should be aiming to get
For everyone who already owns Switches though this really isn't a necessary upgrade, especially if you only game in TV mode or use that most of the time
@DennisNOR Nobody is speaking of this as if it is “fact for all,” I think it’s generally well accepted that our opinions are ours, alone.
@Zuljaras i got the money so ill buy it. I decide if something is worth my money.
For $50 more the Steam Deck puts this to absolute horrible miserable shame. There are so many beautiful amazing games on Steam for far cheaper than what they go for on Switch if they ever make it over at all, and this generation for Nintendo has seen so few excellent AAA titles despite a promising start with BotW and Odyssey; most everything else is a WiiU port or an underwhelming "1.5-esque" sequel or spin off or sports title or a half finished title like New Horizons. Nintendo are my favorite developers of all time because of their ability to match the whimsy and charm of Studio Ghibli at their very best, but as soon as they ever see an ounce of success they squander it with bizarre business decisions or a lack of effort by resting on their laurels and believing their customers will blindly buy anything. I really hope Steam or someone gives them a run for their money so they get competitive again because I really think they got very lucky with the Switch and it gave them an undeserved ego and now we're paying the price.
Can never have too many 3DSs 😂. I've got a normal, a 2DS, a New 3DS XL (SNES edition) and a 2DS XL. I would have had a fifth one if they released the Hylian Shield 2DS in the UK.
Only thing I'm gutted about is selling my original aqua blue 3DS because the L button was broken. The new cosmos black one had a different screen that had a yellow hue to it so it wasn't as vibrant as the original screen!
Also who sells something (2nd hand)to their mom? Kinda cruel tbh. Most people owe more then their mom then the reverse but thats just my opinion. Unless she is a terrible mom but was not the vibe I was getting from Gavin.
I’m getting it as my handheld switch and leaving my original in the dock as my tv switch. I also have a daughter who when she gets old enough to game she can have the old model as her first system.
The Steam Deck announcement saved me from preordering the OLED, very excited about it.
As mentioned before you can find the v2 Switch at 249.99usd and it's not the OLED. The Deck is Internet Required to Play what part of this does people forgot. You have to use it to register any games on Steam internet before you can play them. People seem to forget this. Everytime you launch Steam games you have to be connected. That to me is the biggest downside. Switch even if Digital is downloaded and played Offline option. So Deck already has a leg cut out from under it.
@ralphdibny I still got 15 New 3DS XL units that were released and one is still sealed.
@UltimateOtaku91 This is not worth upgrading, it's just another option for those who don't a switch yet, and frankly I'd encourage them to go for the cheaper current model and spend the rest on a couple of games. That's what I told people the v2 Switches are still in production until the components for them are gone. But people seem to forgot this already.
@UltimateOtaku91 Also give it a few months and the current model will get a price reduction I am guess more then a couple years before that happens.
I wont pay 50euro extra for a cheap (lil bit bigger) screen. Not worth the price. I will save my money for the Steam Deck. Or Nintendo has some secret Pro plans to reveal lol. But for now Steam Deck grabbed me.
It’s not worth it as an upgrade for most but worth it if you’re buying your first Switch. I actually don’t want a pro to be released as I want to get 2-3 more years out of the current Switch before Nintendo go to a new generation.
Interesting what was said about potential sales offered for the older models. A few years ago Nintendo rarely discounted their own games, now e-shop sales seem to be regular (once, twice a year, depending on title). I guess it depends how quickly they phase out the old models (if they do?) I totally fit into a non-buyer of the OLED model, as @Zuljaras wrote right at the top
It’s my 48th birthday today, and my present from my wife was a printed receipt for a white Switch OLED pre-order. Bless her. 26 years of marriage and she’s still surprising me!
@BrintaPap That is absolutely fine! Some people buy every revision of a console. I just stated my opinion.
"i got the money so ill buy it. I decide if something is worth my money." But what you said is also something people that buy from scalpers say.
@Zuljaras The OLED model is worth it if you think it's worth it. That's for everyone to decide. If you don't want to spend the money on it, then don't. If you do want to spend the money on it, then do so.
Personally, I already pre-ordered one. And I can't wait to be playing on the beatiful OLED screen.
"I’m certain I won’t be the only father eyeing the new SKU and using the kids as an excuse to splash out come October time. They can have the old one, I’ll upgrade!
My kids are a tad young and I’ve got a few 3DSs knocking around, but you know. Any excuse."
@sanderev I do not think I should stamp "This is only MY opinion" at the end of all my posts. It is quite obvious.
@SwitchForce I don't mean an "official" price reduction by nintnedo but by shops and online retailers reducing it themselves
I’ll be getting one as my launch model Switch is knackered. It would have been nice if we’d got a power upgrade too, like the New 3DS but I can’t wait any longer for a Pro model. If they launch a Pro Switch next year I’ll just have to live without it.
@BloodNinja Then start owning your opnions by saying fx « in my opinion». 😊👍 Dont say «you» etc... its you, not me or other people. 😉
@DennisNOR That’s wasted typing. We all know it’s opinion. I think for the sake of keeping conversations brief, we can all infer that. Most of us have been around the net long enough to be able to tell when someone is venting an opinion vs. providing proof for a claim.
I plonked down a preorder of this and the Steamdeck 256GB. Initially I thought i'd keep Steamdeck and cancel the OLED. Now i'm thinking the other way. It's cheaper and I don't have enough time to play all my Switch games already without adding my Steam library to that pile.... I love the idea of the Steamdeck, I just don't know how much i'd actually use it.
I currently have a V1 regular Switch which is looking very worse for wear, and a Switch Lite for when I am out of the house. I've been tempted to grab a V2 for the battery alone for the last year or so, so the OLED is appealing to me, especially after reading the previews.
My kids are getting older so I may pass down the V1 and the Lite to them and buy myself a shiny new OLED edition. I wish there was a way to see the screen in action before buying it. I think it would convince a lot of people it may be a worthwhile upgrade. The difference between LCD and OLED is phenomenal.
@BloodNinja not wasted, just lazy and/or a ruling technique, in my opinion 👍
Everyone is welcome to do what they want, but the negativity I keep seeing is depressing.
I want this and I don't really care if you think I'm a stupid fanboy or part of the problem or whatever other insults you want to hurl my way. You can kiss my fat rear end if you're gonna go there.
Look, it's incremental at best and rather an uninspired upgrade, BUT incremental does have some value. Enough said.
@The_Pixel_King Happy Birthday!!
@DennisNOR A ruling technique? I’m unfamiliar with that idiom, could you explain? Anyway, it’s probably a better idea to spend time controlling your own language, instead of expecting others to follow an unneeded custom in casual speaking.
If I hadn't just had eye surgery I would have been on the OLED day one. People are forgetting that a larger and better screen is in fact an upgrade, and one that will be useful for a lot of people. We've been whinging for years about menus and text that are just marginally too small in handheld. This will help significantly.
The fact is, I did just have surgery and my vision is miles better than it was even before I started getting cataracts, so the better screen isn't quite the Day One feature it would have been a year ago. But it's still a really nice thing.
I'll probably be like Gavin, and sometime in the next year or so will say, well, Spawn #2 could use a "new" Switch, so I'll buy myself an OLED and give her my old one. One of the cool things about being a parent is that you get to buy all the cool toys and say "the kids needed it". This is exactly how I got into LEGO as an adult.
@The_New_Butler Right? It’s not like anything we say becomes law. We are just a bunch of folks talking about a hobby we enjoy. I can say, with definitive proof, that your hair is green and we all know I’m just blowing hot air. Though, it would be hilarious to see a thread with over 500 posts each starting with “in my opinion.” LOL
@JasmineDragon Eye surgery is no joke, I’ve had 5 in my right eye over the years so I can relate to your pain. Wishing you a speedy recovery! And thank you for bringing that point up, I completely forgot about the accessibility that the new screen can grant some users. Please accept my apology, in that regard.
@BloodNinja In my opinion, thank you for the kind thoughts! My eyes are still very irritated, mostly because it's peak pollen season, but it's great being able to see things. In my opinion.
@The_Pixel_King Happy birthday! It must be good to be king!!
@JasmineDragon In my opinion, you are an excellent human!!! But only in my opinion. 😑
@Zuljaras yeah screw salpers, i made that clear multiple times, even tho its legal. If you buy from scalpers thats also fine. However i think that people that buy from scalpers and excessively complain about them are idiots.
I've got three OG Switches as well as a Switch Lite, of course I will be picking one of these up too.
I think I would be full on board if the Switch Lite got an OLED upgrade. I like the actual D-Pad on the left side.
I'm gonna trade mine in cuz...yolo...the screen looks really nice and sure it'll be fun to have a new switch, woohoo!
@BloodNinja Dont have to start with imo, there are many ways to rome and its also alot about what the topic is about. For me, Just interesting to observe the amount of heated topics (Nintendos new oled focused in this case) that use ruling technique and how many that respond in that way and further more defend it. Just had to mention it here, since the first post started like that, and more jumped on the train. Cant count anymore how many negative articles pop up on n4g about the oled etc, but seems like it will sell like hot yummy, so in my opinion, its a big irony. 😛
I need a new Switch as my launch Switch isn't sounding too healthy, it's been with e since 6 months after launch, so the OG model.
But I'm going to wait a while before i do that, i have a feeling that this Steam Deck will force Nintendo to reevaluate their pricing, anyone who thinks this won't effect the sales of the OLED Switch are legitimately fooling themselves at this stage.
Long term the effect on the Switch will be totally negligible, but the OLED Switch is about to get a stomping this Christmas. Nintendo are probably expecting sales akin to the Lite (14m as of March this year) - but with everything thats transpired around it, i doubt they'll even sell 10m of them.
@DennisNOR I still have no idea what you are talking about with this “ruling technique.” Are you intentionally avoiding the question? Or are you one of those “if you have to ask, you don’t need to know,” types?
Uh...you can register on your pc. Most people who pre-order the steam deck already have a catalog of games. Steam also has an offline mode for single player and local multi-player that can be turned on before you leave your house. Guess you can sew the leg back on genius.
@SwitchForce where did you read this? You can play steam games offline. It has an offline mode. Why would the deck be any different? We just moved and didn't have Internet for a few days and my son was playing games on steam. You only have to be online to buy and download them. Unless they are games that require an always online connection. Plus don't forget you can put any os on this. Windows with gamepass should be doable. And then all the emulators are going to make this machine a gaming monster. But I really don't think it will take many sales off the switch, its just another gaming option out there, which is always a good thing. In my opinion.
Why do you talk like that? Its bizarre.
I got a number of reasons to get the OLED despite already owning a Switch. Simple as!
Deck has me interested, going to hold for a discount, but knowing Steam, they'll discount hardware and charge extra on delivery!
@The_Pixel_King happy birthday!🎂
@BloodNinja its a way to speak and write where the intention is to rule over that person or multiple people. Like when people write in their own way that the nintendo oled is worth 0 like its a fact that cant be disputed, and/or write like they speak for all to show that «you» that have the opposite opinion stand alone.
@DennisNOR Oh. Well, I don’t think that kind of writing is powerful, or even possible, really. In either case, what’s the outcome? Someone acknowledges that their writing is their opinion, vs someone speaking more succinctly? Is there really a difference in outcome?
I don’t need it but I want it. I want more
If I didn't already own a Switch I'd probably be all over this.
I just can't justify it at that price, especially with Steam DECK right around the corner afterwards for only $50 more.
I'm docked about 75% of the time. It's pretty uncommon for me to take my Switch with me anywhere, unless MAYBE I'm on the verge of missing a day in Animal Crossing. But even then, it probably stays docked!
You know what would incentivize me to play more in handheld mode? A performance bump. Not a big bump, but just enough so that the games that DO struggle in handheld mode match what we get in docked mode. If not, then maybe extend the battery life..?
Hey, OLED is nice, but I would prioritize either of the two things I just mentioned over OLED, because for the most part, we've been asking about them.
Personally, I literally have zero complaints about the Nintendo's current screen and sound quality on Switch.
But anyway, unless the price comes down or more revisions are made to justify the cost, I'm gonna pass and get a DECK.
@Daz1380 that's a great collection! I'm sure it would have broke the bank buying these on switch at full price with switch tax
For launch day owners the equation makes slightly more sense. We have the small battery that runs hot and drains fast and is now going to be approaching 5 years old when this launches..... So a battery replacement is kind of necessary by then anyway. Anyone with a red box v2, there's truly no point
@BloodNinja I just wanted to put it in here, maybe it can give a positive culture change. Communication is after all, as i see it, the biggest challenge we got in this world. Thank you for the entertainment while i was waiting for my daughter to sleep 😅 🙌
It's interesting how controversial this Switch option has become.
I think selling/upgrading to get this new model would be alright. That larger screen is sweet. And more storage is good too.
I think the new model should have been the same price as the OG model.
Ugh, n4"g" is straight trash. That festering 💩hole is a terrible sony fanboy/incel haven that should never be taken seriously.
Haha, Gavin sounds exactly like me, went through every iteration of the 3DS, and I sold my first Switch to my mum so I could get better battery life, except with an extra step, with the Switch Lite in between.
@TheBigK Personally I'd go for the oled. The lite as always come across as a downgrade. Can't even do the switch thing!
@SwitchForce.
You say the Deck is internet required to play. No it is internet required to buy and download your games just like the Switch. You can play 99% of Steam games offline. Who in 2021 doesn't have an internet connection to download games . Hardly a reason for most people not to buy a Steam Deck. Also Steam has an offline mode so you don't have to be online to launch your games the same as Switch. I wish people would stop spreading false information when they haven't got a clue what they're talking about.
Steam Deck is attractive to those Switch owners who are craving for a real Switch hardware upgrade. So, it affects Switch sales in the long run, since nearly all Switch games (except for first parties of course) are available on Steam, and Deck is able to run them way better. Excitment for Steam Deck shows that there was a good market for a Switch pro. Now, Nintendo has to share handheld market (not the Nintendo market) with Valve.
NL posted an article on replacing the joysticks in the Joy-Cons, why have you not tried it?
Smartphones, readers and Nintendo consoles are the three things I buy on release date.
I bought a new reader earlier this year, my new Smartphone is out in October. That leaves the Switch. But because I play mostly docked, do I need this new variant?
I never had a playstation and I promised myself months ago, if the Switch Pro isn't out this year ill buy the PS. And play 3rd party games the way they should be played.
Will I buy the Switch Oled?.......
Will just wait to see how Steam Deck performs and then probably buy one. Don’t care for a switch with OLED since my Switch from day one of releasing is working like new. I have a lot of games on Steam and to be able to play triple AAA games on handheld it’s a bliss. But Steam Deck can go wrong and do not deliver what it promisses
Another article stating the obvious! In case the previous 48 articles were not enough!
as someone right in the market for the switch oled (glitched screen, joycons not snapping into the system well, 95% handheld user), im loosing interest now that the steam deck is coming. ill see how reviews go but if the hands on impressions really are as positive as they are, then ive found the next system i want
at this point people should be saving their money for switch 2 which is basically 2 to 3 years away.
@The_New_Butler Yeah, I agree, the whole THATS JUST AN OPINION thing is wearing me down, it's like saying "College Football is the best" and then asking them to preface that with "I love watching sports". Well of course they do!
@BloodNinja Yeah, I agree, the whole THATS JUST AN OPINION thing is wearing me down, it's like saying "College Football is the best" and then asking them to preface that with "I love watching sports". Well of course they do!
I love the white and black, and I'm sure the OLED screen would look so much better, but I don't think I'll be getting one. My current Switch still works fine, my Joy-Cons don't drift (and I sent the old ones into Nintendo to have them fixed ages ago so they're also fine) and I personally haven't had too many problems with the kickstand (probably because I don't play in tabletop mode all that often). It's come off before, when I was trying to open it out fully, but it just clips back in easily.
@BloodNinja In my opinion, you are an excellent human!!! But only in my opinion. This is hilarious.
With local wireless play available for so many switch games, you can never have too many Switches! The White OLED Switch will be my 8th Switch system lol. The OLED screen, small bezel, kickstand, and new dock are enough to make me upgrade. I'll use the OLED model in portable/tabletop mode only. I can keep my original Switch docked, use my Switch lites for gaming in bed and probably never use my Animal Crossing edition Switches haha. I'll most likely buy the black dock OLED model at some point also. I have a Switch problem I know...
@Zuljaras Which is sort of the reason I pre-ordered mine. The air fans on my V1 Switch barely work first of all, and in general the plastics and display is in poor quality. I'm a heavy handheld user, so the update is pretty great to me.
@hammers1man then where does he get this from
Steamdeck vs Switch? Maby a good article on Nintendolife??
@MarcianoMD yeah. Nintendo keeps selling this thing. Kids dont always know about steamdeck. Some brands etc are only on Nintendo for now... even though Mario found its way to the phone
@Axlroselm yeah. And will they lose it? Is Valve the Sony of the 90's now for Nintendo? I think they got lucky with the switch but 4K might be added at a next console
@METROIDDREAD It’s only my opinion.
@METROIDDREAD Well, and people will also use the “it’s just my opinion,” and then proceed to be as insulting as possible. But you know what? HOMIE DONT PLAY THAT
@hammers1man As someone who travels a lot an internet connection in rural Canada is not as common as you think. I'd assume it is similar in the US especially those in the mid-west US and Northern California. I know this is not an issue in Europe and Japan, but for someone who has to go through the forested areas of Ontario and Quebec, the Steam Deck needing an internet connection is a pain in the butt. Also, unlike the Steam Deck I could be browsing a gas station on my travels and see a Switch game that interests me, buy it and insert it in my Switch and away I go. What I have downloaded to my Steam Deck is what I'm stuck with till I get to a hotel room at my destination or back at home. That and a lot of Hotel Wifi is GARBAGE to download games with so I'm generally still stuck with any games I have downloaded before leaving my house which sucks if a game I'm looking forward to is release during my business trips.
So yes an internet requirement is a big deal for a lot of people. Lots of people are not looking forward to an all-digital future as I can sell and trade my games very easily on Switch. On Steam Deck I'm locked in purchase unless I'm within Valve's very limited return window which they can decline. This is coming from someone who has defended Digital gaming in the past.
@SwitchForce most single player Steam games work offline after downloading, I speak from experience.
Exceptions to the rule are multiplayer games or if a developer (not Valve their fault) implements an online DRM.
Steam Deck is by far not perfect, but get your facts right next time before you claim such stuff.
I know the answer is Capitalism, but personally I would have liked them to sell it for the same RRP at £300 and knock £50 off the OG model (which surely must be cheaper to build after 4 years, and is likely just going into run-off now, so this time next year it’ll be OLED and Lite models only).
I'm definitely of the mindset that OLED is a great business decision (and a relatively predictable one). I know some people think lots of gamers are mad about it.. as Kate said: "“oh no, everyone is going to be so angry.” And I was right about that, at least!", but I don't actually think that's true. Sure, some vocal YouTubers, redditors, social media users in general, etc have expressed their discontent, but I genuinely believe that your average consumer does not like or want half-step, mid generation hardware upgrades.
And quite honestly, sales data from previous systems backs that up. Only about 20% of PS4 sales were PS4 Pro, which means that of the existing users before Pro.. at most, 25% upgraded. Realistically speaking, we can't break down the math on it exactly, but it would be pretty likely to assume (since most future sales were Pro rather than based model, though the base model still continued selling some) that the majority of those sales were new users. I wouldn't be surprised if less than 10% of PS4 users upgraded to the new model and that was a system with actual new hardware.
My point is.. two fold. I don't think many people are actually unhappy about the OLED just being some QoL changes. And many of the ones who are probably wouldn't have upgraded anyway. I personally am ecstatic that there isn't a Switch Pro because then I'm not tempted to spend the money. I'd rather get a next gen console or that new Steam Deck or save the money. And while I might buy a Switch Pro if it were to exist, I'd be frustrated and do so begrudgingly!
@Heavyarms55 I think the OLED is great. It's exactly what I wanted them to announce if they were going to put out new hardware. I'd much prefer this to a big hardware upgrade that made gamers either feel obligated to upgrade or like second class citizens if they didn't. This way.. anyone who wants it has something nice/new to enjoy, but it isn't something that could potentially make the Switch experience worse for those who don't upgrade (and/or late adopters).
@SwitchForce if its still steam wouldnt there be the Go Offline option for playing too? id at least hope so if this is the "portable pc" people keep saying it is
@Lyricana We are also comparing for all intense and purposes a new console (that is what the Steam Deck is don't call it something else) v. a four and half-year-old system in its twilight years. That is like comparing a new X360 to a PS2 back in the day when it had a year headstart on the PS3 (and it was still taken to the cleaners by the Wii so raw horse power means nothing). Let's be honest a Switch successor is at most two years out and more likely a year away. Any graphical advantages the Steam Deck has will be moot by then as Nvidia will probably be providing the next-gen Switch GPU so it will be a beast of a machine as well. That and Nintendo's first-party offerings smoke the non-existent Valve offerings so it is basically a pure 3rd party machine vs Nintendo 1st party and 3rd party within a year and some change. That is also ignoring the Steam Deck will also be competing with the XSX and PS5 for consumer headspace.
@SwitchForce The Steam Deck doesn't require the internet to play. Like any online storefront, obviously you need internet access to download your games, but beyond that.. Steam has ALWAYS worked offline. The only games that can't be played offline are the ones that are online only on any platform, like Overwatch or Apex Legends, etc.
I'll wait for reviews on OLED. If it really shows a more colorful picture, then maybe I'll buy it,i play mostly in portative and better screen would be large improvement. With Deck I have to wait for feedback from ACTUAL users, judging by the information available, none of the systems needed to optimize games for the portable is even close to being completed. And the stories of journalists about two pre-selected games (non of which will not even fit on the $ 400 version btw) are just marketing chatter.
Has anybody mentioned something about scratches that dock leaves on Switch screen? As for now, dock scratches the part of the screen that is not showing picture. New OLED Switch has wider screen and scratches would be seen during the gameplay.
@alecseus according to early impression reviews (some already got to try it out, IGN I believe is one), they described the OLED panel as how the Gameboy Advance SP was, i.e, the SP received backlight compared to the OG Advanced. This made it very hard, if not impossible to some to go back and readjust to the OG Advanced's display. It's apparently the same here, not my words, but the OLED is apparently very great, making it hard to go back to the LCD of the other models.
@Wexter I'm not exactly sure what your point with all that was. It seemed like you thought I was arguing OLED vs the Steam Deck, which I wasn't. I just randomly mentioned the Steam Deck at the end as a hypothetical about why I'm glad there isn't a massively upgraded hardware Switch Pro system, because I have other things I'm considering buying this year. That's all.
As for the Steam Deck vs a hypothetical future Switch 2. Well, first of all.. I don't agree with your assessment that a Switch 2 is likely out in one year, two at most. I think two at the earliest and likely three. Or rather, 1.5-2.5 years for a Fall 2023 or Spring/Fall 2024.
But secondly, I'd buy a brand new Switch successor in a heartbeat, but that has nothing to do with whether or not I'd buy a Steam Deck. You said it's a console and "don't call it something else", but.. it literally is something else. While it's true that it is a console, I don't disagree there, it's also more than that. It'll easily be the best portable emulation device on the market. There are millions of gamers buying things like the Retroid Pocket, Anbernic 350+ series, etc who now have a $399 system with insanely more power than any of those and not limited to just playing some retro games. It's also an absolutely, irrefutably fully functional PC. Anyone in the market for a gaming laptop or mini PC or desktop alternative could at least consider it.
Also, anyone with a big Steam library might want to have that on the go as is. Not to mention.. it isn't just third party system vs Nintendo's first party system which also has all third party games. That isn't reality. Nintendo will undoubtedly have a lot of exclusives. They always do. But so will the Steam Deck, because there are thousands of games that either come to PC first (especially indie games) or games that ONLY ever come to PC. Not to mention that with Microsoft's push to make 100% of their games PC and Xbox, that means anyone with a Steam Deck has access to 100% of the games Microsoft has to offer.
I'm not here trying to say one is better and should be gotten over the other. That wasn't why I mentioned it in the first place at all. But since you brought it up, I thought it prudent to mention why I think both devices (despite the Switch successor just being theoretical at this point) have merit and reasons to easily coexist.
@Lyricana While I'm disappointed in the lack of any upgrade on the order of n3ds vs 3ds, I also agree strongly with your sentiment about being glad it's not splitting customers. I hate that idea of always making existing owners feel left out and abandoned. It happened with PS4 pro and x1x, and even with n3ds, launching with mh4 that looked and ran terrible on stock hardware, followed by other games that screamed "we'll even let you play with your obsolete ancient machine"
@SamsungAppleOnePlus I read them, but i will wait for reviews from experts.
If nintendo made a "pro" version and had games that would only run on the "pro" version then you'd all be loving this OLED upgrade instead
@Ear_wiG my kid has the light and I really love it as a handheld. My origins, og has died (cracked back to to modest fall) and just not turning on, so the new Oled is too tempting for me to say no to. If I had a working I wouldn’t bother, maybe get the lite for traveling
@TheBigK mm. I’m in a kinda similar sitch. I’m going die getting a replacement oled. Not as nice portable form as the lite but plenty fine enough and then the big Telly for the epic games. Plus I’ll now have two docks
A point on this, “ Only about 20% of PS4 sales were PS4 Pro, which means that of the existing users before Pro.. at most, 25% upgraded.”
Good research but stats are often about framing. I wager in some Sony board room it’s all, “we sold 20% more ps4 this quarter following our upgrade strategy”.
@BloodNinja Heavy wears the crown! 😝
Thanks man, it’s been a great day with my family, and I have Skyward Sword HD waiting for me when we return home from a night away.
@Just_2_milky Thank you, buddy!
How many articles can a website make out of one announcement.
@sixrings Lol, you must be new here 😉
@The_New_Butler Doug Bowser 6/18/21: “We are always looking at technology and how technology can enhance gameplay experiences. It’s not technology for technology’s sake."
Nintendo, 2 weeks later: "introducing the same hardware but majorly upgraded with a new display panel technology from Samsung!!!"
Yeah. I assume the old igzo just wasn't being produced anymore or went up in price. I also think Kate of probably onto something with the idea they were intending a more meaningful chip set upgrade and with shortages couldn't pull it off but already had a massive display order waiting they already paid for. Had to do SOMETHING with them. And no wholesaler is going to buy half a million 720p displays in 2021
Though now that it works, and makes money, why ever sell real upgrades? (Jim Ryan likey)
@Wavey84 At least someone else notices how terrible the switch screen is...
@sixrings @JasmineDragon don't complain, it beats the 30 separate stories and 3 post mortems from a Direct!
Or "Phil Spencer's lips can be made out to have possibly said the word Switch while instructing employee to turn lights on"
I have the oldest switch. The battery is moaning at me and the screen is looking scruffy. I love the catalogue and feel like it's worth the investment for me as I play a lot of handheld. Upgrading also means my goddaughter can have a free switch too and I'm super excited as she's just about to hit 11 and it's like gifting a few hundred hours of fun with the games I can "lend" her for a bit.
Totally get it's divisive and I'll be pissed if a 4K switch with a RAM / 256gb+ storage model shows up shortly after but ***** it. The screen looks great.
I hope Nintendo sees the Steam handheld as a huge reason to get N64/GameCube titles on NSO rather than a the super retro arcade approach. They'd have Mario on the currency in Japan in no time with that move
@The_Pixel_King LOL Love it!
@Lyricana No no no, your comment is too positive and nice. This can't be real. I must be having heat stroke hallucinations. XD
i have a switch v2 and a switch lite, and im definitely trading in my switch v2 for the oled switch. i play alot in handheld mode so its wortb it for me and ill basically just keep my switch lite bc i have it for personal reasons. the screen is well worth the upgrade, plus the white joycons, and i needed to replace mine eventually anyway. i havent had an oled device since vita and i barely remember it. so im very stoked and counting the days to release. i pre ordered as soon as they were live
As a handheld gamer (and stubborn tabletop player), the OLED Switch is definitely worth it to me. I'm a little bit bothered by the slightly heavier weight than the launch model however...
@Wavey84 Let's hope it doesn't suffer from image retention like a lot of OLED Vita's have. I had screen burn in on two Samsung Galaxy AMOLED phones.
I've been waiting years to gets ports of so many must-have games that still have no sign of making it to the system so no. And with below-720p resolutions in a lot of games with no anti-aliasing options to smooth that out even, and the same battery life, what is even the point of getting an OLED screen... Nooooope. I love Nintendo's software but I'm playing 'em on PC now instead with awesome ReShade effects like a BotW-style toon shader in Smash Ultimate. Looks awesome and runs amazing! I'm over Nintendo hardware. (And my PC is low-budget even)
Bring on the Steam Deck, instead!
@SpaceboyScreams And if the thing ends up running Yuzu well (especially as it matures) the thing can basically run every single Mario, Zelda, Animal Crossing, Kirby, Metroid, etc. game ever made.
AND you can code your own games and modding/romhacking tools on the thing!
@SpaceboyScreams Also it really is a shame that they've basically just been coasting on their success. People just wanted the Virtual Console and for their games to not run at sub-720p (like 380p-ish for games like XC2) in handheld and sub-1080p docked. At least that's all I wanted. (and enough power for certain games I love to get ports)
@Wavey84 You don't have to be OLED/plasma master race to see the problem. High quality lcd is far better as well. I'm cheap. I have a DLP tv, one of the first 1080p tvs. I'll probably have it another decade. I don't game on it. I use an lg ips 4k/60 monitor. It's great. Has gray black line any ops. But IQ is still excellent. I also have color calibrated ips 1600x1200 ops, the old flame thrower ones with the CCD lamps. Apple retina is, or was last time I looked, ips. Looks great minus the gray black trade off.
Switch is also ips but it's the worst ips I've ever seen to date. It has the color depth and contrast of an old 6 bit FRC TN panel. I don't know what discount warehouse they found those things in. Samsung is shockingly premium for Nintendo.
Can we get a poll on user of this site that preordered the steam deck. I put my hat in for a 256gb
Seems it is becoming safe to say that for every post that is endorsing the OLED being hot garbage rolling downhill; there is another that is excited for the bigger screen and more potential resolution going from LCD to OLED. Judging by preorder sales Nintendo is not worried about our forums.
Disappointed. What the switch needed the most was a performance boost. If not for 4K, at least to get 60 FPS. However, since it didn’t happen and I have a V1, I’ll trade it in and get the OLED for $200 (I assume I can trade mine for $150). I’ll get better battery, bigger and better screen and new joy cons
Probably not, but Nintendo has been pretty up front about what it does and doesn't offer.
Now with the Steam Deck coming, it looks like Nintendo dropped the ball with having no pro announcement. Four year old hardware with a slightly better screen looks quite lacking by comparison.
@BloodNinja You really think that steam thingy will be a hit and punish that eeeevil Nintendo?!
We don't plan on picking this up, as we have a Switch that stays docked 95%+ of its time.
But I'm curious on one of Tom's thoughts, "I doubt Nintendo will phase out the original in any way, for example." Did Nintendo keep manufacturing the original 3DS after the XL and New 3DS were released, or did they stop producing certain models over time?
I'm thinking Nintendo will only be producing the OLED from here on out, and using the holidays to help clear the inventory of the original still at $300. Then, they can drop the price of the OLED if they want/need after the holidays.
I don't know though, maybe Nintendo kept on producing the original 3DS after the XL models and the New 3DS were released? Anybody have a timeline of when models were stopped in production?
But, I'm hoping the Steam Deck catches on as a popular alternative, and that maybe helps force Nintendo to update/drop the price of the Switch systems, and if not the Switch, hopefully the Steam Deck helps and the GPU market in general will see price reductions.
Also, on the OLED part, I haven't heard a lot of great things about the longevity of them in general. I know they do great colors, but from what people say, they burn out (still) and just have issues over time. I'll be curious to see what the situation is with this one over time.
Not worth it at all. If you have a Switch, you'll be getting the same performance. Buy an Ethernet adapter instead. Only cost me $10. Need 64gb of storage? Buy a 64gb sd card for $20-$30 bucks. Save your money. Wake me up when Nintendo actually releases a performance upgrade (hopefully Steam Deck forces their hand there)
I definitely want an OLED Switch right away. I have this pain in the butt situation with my game saves choking my internal memory. If we could only have game saves on Micro SD! I'm also really excited to play many games on this OLED screen. I've got an old Vita and it looks incredible (no screen burn in or anything). I'm also excited about the kickstand. I mostly play docked, but play a fair amount handheld and use the crappy kickstand once a week or so. The new one sounds fantastic. Honestly, I'm such a Nintendo nerd that I'd get this new Switch if it had only one of those features! I am sick of trying to buy consoles from my experiences attempting to buy PS5 and series X. I hope it isn't like that with the new Switch.
@CoffeeWithGames I like the idea of the Deck allowing economy of scale. Maybe the Switch Pro could use a very similar architecture and thus reduce costs? Deck level of performance would be awesome for a new Switch model. I've had an OLED Vita for years with no screen problems. The opposite, really. It looks amazing. I bought it used from Japan. Maybe it wasn't used extensively.
@NEStalgia I had a friend who bought Hyrule Warriors on his standard 3DS and he didn't understand how it could run so badly. When he saw it on my New 3DS, he was deeply disappointed. Never bought a New himself, but he felt frustrated and reconsidered a few future games. And I think maybe Nintendo realized that it divided users some and learned from it.
@KIRO Oh, yeah. I mean, I'm sure it was a worthwhile financial success for them. My point is just.. if only 10ish% of your fan base even wants to upgrade to the newer hardware, it's hard to feel like the majority would have been disappointed had the new hardware never existed. That's my only point. I just think there are probably a lot of relieved. Switch already gets slammed sometimes for struggling to run its own exclusive software. I imagine that issue would be compounded moderately by a real hardware revision, just like what happened with base PS4/XB1/and even 3DS.
Can the web developers at Nintendo Life please make the 'leave a comment' section at the top of the comments rather than right down the bottom. Took me way too long to get down here. I suppose there's enough comments here anyway, but here's my bob's worth. If they sold the OLED Switch console by itself (no dock, no joy cons, no other accessories) for something like $300 AUD, that would be ideal and I would consider it, cause at the end of the day, the screen is the only big deal. But of course they won't release a package of that kind because that's not profitable enough for Nintendo. At this current point in time, I really don't need it.
@CoffeeWithGames I don't think burn in will be a problem here even though people have had it on their OLED Vita's. I have had it on Samsung AMOLED phones from using Google maps as my sat nav. The problem there is the static icons on Google maps and the phones ambient lighting which really raises the brightness on sunny days. It shows though that only after a couple of hours you can have Google maps icons burned into the screen because my journeys are very rarely more than 2 hours. Static icons in games and high brightness will be the cause of burn in. Nintendo software can prevent this I am sure.
I am just happy that handheld gaming is alive and well...and there are new cool toys one could buy!!
If you play handheld only and want a bigger screen the it may be worth a punt but selling it with a new dock is a con! The con and console should have been split separately to give better choice for the consumer really. If you play docked - and in 2021 does anyone really play docked because lets be honest, docked the majority of games now look bloody awful - so its pushing the price up uneccesarily. But its not putting anyone off as pre order are selling out all over the place. Nintendo fans will buy Nintendo regardless and from that point of view Nintendo know they will make easy money. The OLED just feels lazy to me and no way will I buy one.
Waiting for just the OLED model with no dock at $199?
@Lyricana Yeah, the mid gen bumps tend to become semi mandatory at least to run certain games. I kind of like the idea with Xbox, because they're kind of pc-like by nature and with steam deck will likely be even more so. But switch and even ps.... I'm very mixed about it.
@jarvismp I played docked with no problem. Granted, I also play N64 games on original hardware at their original 240i resolution, so it's hard to get at me.
Grille at the top getting more fins?
1. I like the steam deck but let's be real. This thing won't be any threat to Nintendo and won't effect Nintendo business decisions one single bit.
2. Lol @ Nintendo got lucky with switch. Hey I guess we can all join in with this silly talk and say Sony just got lucky with PS4 success.
I have a release date og and a lite. the og is in bad shape despite the fact that I've taken good care of it. the back cracked a bit from the inflated battery, battery life is poor and the fan is super loud. I preordered the steam deck and am considering perhaps going for the oled switch.. I'd rather get a ps5 or an xbox if I could find them
@SwitchForce EXACTLY. this isn't a switch for steam. Its "Steam you can play in the corner of your room, instead of at the desk"
Ironically I only know one PS4 Pro owner and it’s a friend of mine. His launch PS4 was on its last legs two years ago (the blu ray drive was failing to read frequently) so rather than attempt to fix it he traded it in on a Pro. Which sounds like a turbine going on afterburner.
I think Nintendo did a crap ton of research on their handhelds and realized that a lot of people played them in the house rather than on the go as was previously assumed.
They looked at that stat and said “what if we offered a device that was primarily a handheld, but could be hooked up to a TV when at home?”
They didn’t get lucky. They saw a niche that wasn’t being filled. Handheld players who liked the convenience of moving around freely but would probably play on the big tv if given the chance. Turns out Nintendo sort of hit the jackpot with that idea. A much bigger market that I think no one realized was there for years.
Sad to say but OLED version isn't worth to buy if you own Switch. Steam Deck is what new Switch should have been: "bluetooth 5.0 support, better gpu that can support games like jedi fallen order, ssd instead of emmc" etc.
I've had time to reflect on this subject & I've decided to make the purchase. The next Zelda is probably still some time off & having had the Switch from launch, any upgrade is appreciated at the moment. Besides that new dock does look good & having an LAN wired in will be put to good use with those "Always online games" don't know the correct term. (Hitman 3, Guardians, etc)
Nobody knows this yet officially, but do you people think there will be a OLED switch bundle around Christmas or in 2022 ? I am tempted at buying it in October because I play like 40% handheld, but don't want to pay the extra price just for a few more features....
