Police resort to lathi charge in Shivamogga after two groups clashed over Savarkar, Tipu Sultan flexes row on Independence Day.

Two men were stabbed in Shivamogga on Monday after two groups from different faiths clashed at Ameer Ahmed circle over putting up of VD Savarkar's flex. Police have imposed prohibitory orders in the city to avoid escalation of the matter.

On Monday, a group of youths came with Savarkar's flex banner to put it up on a high mast lighting pole at Ameer Ahmed circle in the heart of the city. Few youths of another faith objected to it and wanted to put up Tipu Sultan's poster instead, which was followed by a verbal duel and a physical altercation between the two groups.

In the meantime, few youths managed to put up Savarkar's poster amid the scuffle. The group members from another faith removed the Savarkar flex which led to a tense situation.

The police rushed to the spot and resorted to mild lathicharge to disperse the crowd. Right-wing groups again tried to put up Savarkar's poster but permission was denied by the police.

Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal members staged a flash protest demanding to allow them to put up Savarkar's flex. Senior police officials rushed to the spot and managed to disperse the crowd.

Police have imposed section 144 in the city as precautionary measures.

Two men were stabbed in two different areas of the city. 26-year-old Prem Singh was stabbed in Upparkere.

In another incident, 27-year-old Praveen was stabbed with a knife in Ashok Nagar, while he was returning home after shutting his shop in Gandhi Bazar.

Two men are being treated at the McGann Hospital.

Police are checking whether two incidents are related to the scuffle that took place at Ameer Ahmed circle in the city.

Security has been beefed up and additional forces have been deployed at sensitive areas.

Shivamogga DC has declared holiday for schools and colleges on Tuesday in the city and in Bhadravati.

BJP state president Nalin Kumar termed people who removed Savarkar's flex as 'terrorists'.

"Strict action must be taken against people who removed Savarkar's photo. They are anti-nationals, terrorists. BJP condemns the incident. Such incidents are backed by SDPI, which is supported by Congress," Kateel said.

He also slammed Congress and said, "People in RSS consider Bharat as their mother but for Siddaramaiah it is Sonia Gandhi."

Karnataka state Congress in-charge Randeep Singh Surjewala accused the government of 'spreading communal violence'.

"BJP is using SDPI to create unrest in the state. BJP has failed to give good administration and to maintain law and order. It is unbelievable that such an incident has taken place on the Independence Day," Surjewala said.
